Harbor Oaks Fishing Tips Featuring Captain Robert Hamilton

I have been fishing the Texas Coast for 40 years, and I’ve been a Coast Guard licensed guide in the Rockport area since 1987. I primarily fish in the Rockport area in Aransas, Carlos, Redfish, Copano, Corpus Christi, Nueces, Mesquite, and San Antonio Bay Systems. This is a great time of year for fishing!

Starting in the middle of May, Croaker should become readily available for speckled trout bait. Croaker and Trout are both in place now, but shrimping is good. Bait Shrimpers have to match their shrimp catch with equal amounts of bay catch like Croaker right now.

Speaking of shrimp…. live shrimp under a popping cork is very effective this time of year. This works very well with a 12 to 18 inch leader. I use a triple (treble) hook with a small weight. The windy and muddy water on a spring day in the flats/bay are ideal for this technique. Later in the summer the perch and other trash fish make this technically impossible, but right now it will do the job and get you some good fish!
